Alexa came onto the German market for the first time in 2016 in Amazon’s Echo Smart Speakers. But today you no longer need an echo box to access Alexa: the AI assistant is now in a variety of devices. In addition to the various Echo speakers, Amazon offers Echo Auto, for example, a mobile version for vehicles.
On December 10, 2020, Amazon’s first data glasses came onto the market with the Echo Frames. You can also wear Alexa on your nose with it – but only in the USA for the time being. The number of surprising Alexa devices has been increasing every few months since then. The voice AI sits in printers, wall clocks, or soap dispensers. Of course, Amazon Alexa also installs in the remote controls of some Fire TV sticks or Fire TV-certified smart TVs.
Many of the Alexa functions are also available for smartphones. If you don’t feel like Siri, Bixby, or the Google Assistant (Guide), you can get the Alexa app from the respective stores of smartphones and tablets with Android, iOS, or FireOS.
The smartphone app is also the central control hub for Alexa users: Here you set up the Amazon devices such as the Smart Speaker Echo 4 (test) or the Smart Display Echo Show 8 (test), create routines, or activate multiroom. In this Alexa guide, we explain what that is, how you deal with it, and which basics you still need to know.
How do I set up Alexa on my smartphone?
To set up the voice assistant correctly, open the Alexa app and log in with your Amazon account. Then she will guide you through voice training with Qualcomm Voice Assist.
Here you will be asked to say “Alexa” five times in a row. Speak in your natural voice color with slight variations so that Alexa can easily understand you in the future. Next, the app asks if you want to activate the hands-free mode. More on this in the next paragraph.
What is the hands-free mode in the Alexa app?
As soon as you set up your smartphone for the first time, you will be asked whether you want to use the hands-free mode of the Alexa app . This allows the voice assistant to answer queries and execute voice commands, even when the smartphone screen is locked. If you want to activate or deactivate the mode later, you can do so in the app menu.
The setting is somewhat hidden, however. Opens the “More” button at the bottom right of the start screen. Go to “Settings” and then “Device Settings”. You will find the hands-free option under “Alexa on this phone”. By the way, you can also delete the voice training from the initial setup and perform it again here.
How do I activate dark mode in the Alexa app?
If the Alexa app is set up, you can choose between light and dark mode. To do this, tap on “more” at the bottom of the screen and then select “Alexa app settings”. There you will find the “Color Scheme” menu with the options light and dark. The system design is activated there by default.
How do I set up the Echo 4 (Dot) Smart Speaker with the Alexa app?
To set up an Echo device without a screen, you always need the Alexa app. How to set up and use Alexa Smart Displays like the Echo Show 10 (Guide) can be found in the linked article. Once you have installed it on your smartphone and set it up as explained above, connect the Echo with the supplied power cable and connect it to the power supply. After a few seconds, you will receive a message on the app that Echo can be set up.
At the same time, Alexa reports from the device that it is ready and the light ring shines orange. This color indicates the configuration mode of the echoes. Press Next in the app and select the appropriate WiFi network. If the access data for the WiFi network is already stored in the Alexa app, you do not have to enter the network key again. In the next step, the app asks in which room Echo is located.
This is important in order to set up appropriate groups and routines later and to use multiroom. However, the entry is voluntary, as is the address information that follows. Once the setup is complete, the app offers to start linking smart home devices right away.
How do I connect lights and other smart home devices to Alexa?
With the voice command “Alexa, search for smart home devices”, Alexa starts the device search on an Echo and then guides you through the pairing process. If that doesn’t work without further ado, take a look at the Alexa app. Select “Devices” at the bottom of the screen.
Tap on the plus symbol in the top right corner and then on “Add device“. Alexa will then suggest popular brands such as Philips Hue or Tuya. Below you will find different categories of lamps, sockets, cameras, and door locks. For example, if you want to connect a Philips Hue lightbulb to Alexa, tap on “Lamp” and then select the brand of the device.
Once you have screwed the lamp into the socket, switch it on and wait a moment. To put the smart lightbulb into pairing mode, the light quickly turns off and on again. The lamp flashes to confirm that it is ready. Tap on “Search devices” in the app and Alexa will show you which devices are ready after a short time.
Selects the appropriate lamp and assigns it to its location. Then you can control the lighting in the desired room by voice command.
Voice commands: “Alexa, turn on the light in the office” / “Alexa, let there be light”.
