2019 was the year in which most manufacturers struggled to give us more cameras in the cell. Huawei started giving us four on the Huawei P30 Pro; Samsung did the same with three rear cameras on the Galaxy S10 Plus and topped it with two front … and Xiaomi, one of the Chinese companies that grow the most in number of users worldwide, ended up launching a Penta camera cell phone, the Xiaomi MI Note 10.
But do we really need so many cameras on a cell phone?
We test all these cell phones, and in fact, each camera has different qualities that make it unique. While the Huawei P30 Pro gave us a 5X optical zoom, the Galaxy S10 Plus gave us excellent portrait effects with a variable aperture camera. The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max added a third sensor to join the phones that offer a wide-angle lens, and they also gave us the funny selfies.
In the Top 5 cell phones with the best camera of the year, we select from five to one, the following cell phones:
Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro: excellent price and very complete cameras.
Pixel 3A and 3A XL: despite having a single sensor, their photos are very good, and their price is affordable.
iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max: because Apple phones now have a wide-angle sensor and video and photo quality has improved a lot.
The Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus: an incomparable set of cameras, with a unique variable aperture in the market.
The Huawei P30 Pro: because it has simply a good set of cameras and the optical zoom that to the date of our select few cell phones possess.
If something is clear, it is that more sensors do not necessarily mean better quality, because the Pixel 3 A and 3A XL only have one sensor but make very nice photos, although more sensors, more possibilities.
Folding (or flexible) cell phones were also very important this year and we know that what we saw in 2019 is just the beginning. After a setback, Samsung made the Galaxy Fold a reality; We met the Huawei Mate X; Motorola launched the Moto Razr of cover and Microsoft unveiled Duo, although the latter will not arrive until the end of 2020. For next year we expect a Galaxy Fold 2, see something of Xiaomi and possibly news of LG, Sony, and Huawei again.
Other important trends of 2019 have been reflected in new devices that incorporate virtual assistants. Amazon launched the Echo Frames glasses and the Echo Loop ring with Alexa and the virtual assistant also reached the Fitbit Versa 2.
Both Google and Amazon have worked to allow us simplified and chained conversations with virtual assistants, and both have multilingual functions that are still in test mode. Siri remains the great mystery, which in 2020 might, once and for all, learn new tricks.
